How we calculate the optimal food amount for your dog
Our dog food calculator uses a percentage-based method, with adjustments based on scientific principles of canine nutrition.

Percentage Adjustments
The percentage varies based on several factors:

- Puppies (4-5 months): 7% of body weight

- Puppies (6-9 months): 5% of body weight
- Puppies (9-12 months): 4% of body weight
- Young Adults (12-18 months): 3.5% of body weight
- Adults (over 18 months): 2.5% of body weight
- Seniors (7+ years): 2% of body weight
Weight Adjustments:
- Large dogs (over 45kg): -0.5% (metabolically more efficient)
- Small dogs (under 5kg): +0.5% (higher metabolism)
Activity Level Adjustments:
- High activity: +0.5% (working dogs, very athletic)
- Low activity: -0.5% (sedentary, limited exercise)
Body Condition Adjustments:
- Underweight: +0.5% (needs to gain weight)
- Overweight: -0.5% (needs to lose weight)
Understanding Body Condition Score (BCS)
The Body Condition Score is a standardized way to assess if your dog is at a healthy weight:
Underweight (BCS 1-3/9):
- Ribs, spine, and hip bones easily visible
- No palpable fat over the ribs
- Obvious abdominal tuck when viewed from the side
- Very pronounced waist when viewed from above
Ideal Weight (BCS 4-5/9):
- Ribs can be felt without excess fat covering
- Waist is observed behind ribs when viewed from above
- Belly tucked up when viewed from side
- Clear visible waistline
Overweight (BCS 6-9/9):
- Ribs difficult to feel under moderate to thick fat cover
- Waist barely visible or absent when viewed from above
- No abdominal tuck or even a rounded abdomen
- Noticeable fat deposits over lumbar area and base of tail
